I've been playing guitar/bass for about 5 years now, but the only band I've been in is the one at church. Thus, I don't have much of a grasp for soloing or fills here-and-there, etc. Should I just play more and more to get better?

Yes, but it will really help to play with other people. You can study fills and solos, but it is better to feel them!
I was a slow learner, I just couldn't get the lead guitar thing, but then all of a sudden it clicked. I think a big part of this was learning and practicing scales.
