How to submit an audio file

The reason you are here is to share your music and hopefully find some people to collaborate with.

Uploading music is relatively simple, just follow these steps:

1) Prepare your file, this site can handle wav format, but they are big files. The limit for files on this site is 8MB, so a wav file would only be about 40secs.

The preferred file format is mp3 as it compresses the audio so that it is about 10 times smaller than a wav file. You can compress it to different levels so you could have a ten minute track in a 8MB file. The more you compress it, the lower the audio quality. Be aware that mp3 compression adds a microsecond of silence to the beginning of your file.

An emerging file format is ogg or oggvorbis. This is a compression like mp3 and will probably become the new web standard. Ogg compression adds no extra bits to your file. See below for a fuller explanation.

2) Go to 'Create content' on this site and select 'audio'.
There are lots of options on this upload form, so let's have a look at them.

  • !title by !artist
This looks a bit scary, but you can add manually the track title, followed by the artist.
  • Body, this is a free text area where you can add extra info about the track such as chords, tempo etc.
  • Insert assets, here you can attach any related file, such as an ogg version, picture, midi file, reason project file etc.
  • Audio type, there are two selection boxes here The first is asking if the file is for collaboration, mid collaboration, a finished project or a demo for your profile. The second is asking if this audio is your own creation or another member's. No cover songs are allowed on this site.
  • Current File: here is where you can browse to your file and upload it.
  • Audio Images: upload a picture to use as the cover art or other artwork.
  • Groups: if you belong to a project group, you can attach your audio to that group.
  • Creative Commons: here you can select the kind of license for your audio. There is a link to the Creative Commons info site.
  • 3) Click submit.

Should I upload MP3 or OGG?

Online music project collaboration needs to be as easy to share files and communicate as possible. So lets have a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of both compression formats:

    ADVANTAGES

    MP3 OGG
  • MP3 is a well accepted format for the web.
  • MP3 is an OK compression format.
  • Most music softwares can export audio as MP3
  • OGG is higher quality.
  • OGG is a tighter file size.
  • ERGO - the same quality music takes less space.
  • DISADVANTAGES

    MP3 OGG
  • MP3 puts a gap at the front of the file.
  • MP3 quality is not really suitable for project sharing.
  • OGG will not play on this site - yet!
  • People don't like to download things they are not used to.
  • People should not have to choose. They should upload both. Upload the mp3 version of their track and then use the Attached audio files
    Existing audio file:
field to attach an OGG version of the track.

That is pretty much it. Any questions just ask, but you probably wont know until you try.
